Personalised recommendations on Digital Tunes will Aug. 13

Last week we rolled out our new personalised recommendation engine, which will help users navigate through all the tunes on Digital Tunes.

The recommendation engine is simple to use: once Digital Tunes has enough info about you, either from your purchase or wishlist data, the system will generate a list of personalised recommendations using data from Last.FM. When you login to Digital Tunes you will see your personal recommmendations on the home page, and also under the main menu at > my account > recommendations.

Because the data is drawn from millions of users preferences on Last.FM, and not purchase data, the recommendations should be much more accurate than other recommendation schemes. I even found a couple of tunes I'd missed thanks to my personal recommendations, so login and check it out!

Digital Tunes 1.0 is here! will May. 06

We've been working our tits off for the last three months at Digital Tunes fixing bugs, adding groovy features, tending to our horses, all to make sure our little baby www.digital-tunes.net is ready to walk on its own two feet this Monday the 7th of May!

To celebrate this monumentous occasion we thought we would share the love around a bit and give away some free tunes from the store :) All you gotta do is register on www.digital-tunes.net if you haven't already, and every couple of hours we will give away to some user browsing the store a free tune. So why not go and do a bit of internet "research" while your boss aint looking, and who knows you might even earn yourself some funky music ;) If you win we give you a magic e-voucher thingy, so you can pick any tune off the site to download, whenever you want.

If you are into underground/soulful/deep/jazzy beats then probably you'll find something you're into at Digital Tunes, from the latest underground dubstep and drum & bass thru to deep house beats and broken/funky beats. All our mp3s are 320 CBR quality and we also let you download CD quality flacs too for the same price (you would think this was really cool if you were geeky enough to know what flac is).

Ok enough of the chat, check out the store and let the tunes do the talking...

New features in store... will Mar. 18

Some new features and extensive tweaks with the last batch of updates to the Digital Tunes shop. Coolest new feature is the "Similar releases" box shown on release pages. This lets you see what tunes people have been digging related to the release shown: this is a cool way to find some more music you might want to check out.

The "Similar artists" box has been heavily tweaked, now showing only artists relevant to Digital Tunes. This is another great way of finding new music you might be into... even I found some stuff on the store I hadn't spotted before!

Along with lots of little improvements and bug-fixes you can also select to "Remember me on this computer" when you login. Next time you come back to the store you will be automatically logged in. If you uncheck the box you can also clear the cookie stored on the computer, useful if you are using a public machine.

Getting rid of iTunes on the Mac will Feb. 14

I've got a bit of a pet hate with iTunes (the audio player software that is). One thing I can't stand is that every clip you listen to on the web goes into your library. Thats not so cool if you go shopping a lot for tunes and have thousands of those little clips filling up your library:( Then the m3u playlist support is totally broken. For example on Digital Tunes, if you click on the play button for a whole album, any normal audio player (WinAmp, XMMS...) will read the m3u playlist and then you get to listen to all the clips from the album. But iTunes just imports them all into your library, so once the first clip stops playing the next thing played will just be some random tune in your library, argghhh.

VLC is a pretty decent audio player for the mac, its free and open source and supports pretty much every audio/video format out there, including FLAC and OGG, sweet. Unfortunately getting Firefox to use it to play mp3s and m3u playlists is a bit of a bugger, even after I changed the OSX file associaions so mp3s played using VLC, not iTunes, it still kept loading up iTunes. Being known for occasional geek tendencies I decided to track down the config file for Firefox and fix this once and for all. Read on if you want to see how you can configure Firefox to only use VLC:

Using spotlight, search for 'mimeTypes.rdf'

Probably the top hit will be the right one. Check its in the Firefox Profiles directory by clicking the little information 'i'.

Open this file with some text editor like TextEdit. This is actually a bit of a pain in the arse: First right/control click -> 'Reveal in finder'

From the Finder right/control click -> 'Open With' on the file highlighted

You might want to back up the file now, before you make any changes ;)

Using Find/Replace replace all 'iTunes' with 'VLC' (apple-f to bring up the find dialog)

Now save the file, reboot Firefox and you should be done :)
